Unplugging

It's Thursday and I am looking ahead to the weekend, ready to unplug, even if just for a little bit, and recharge. It’s time. No, it’s overdue.

They say that the average American checks their phone an average of 46 times per day, with the most extremely ‘connected’ checking theirs every 6 ½ minutes! If I were honest with myself, I am probably way above average on the 46 times per day. It’s become more of a habit. I don’t think I am afraid of missing out on anything, but I know that my habit is causing me to miss out on the things I SAY are important to me.

I once took a sign language class where one of our assignments was to go an entire day without speaking. The hardest parts were things I least expected, like asking my dog if she wanted to go outside. My takeaway, however, was that sometimes we speak just to fill space because silence often feels awkward. Once I got past that, it was freeing to just have my thoughts.

So, while I think a one-day tech cleanse might be too much for me, I am going to commit to a 3-hour reboot. Like my assignment in the sign language class, I expect a few surprises both in what made it difficult and what the benefit was. I will check in next week and let you know how I did!
